“In January 2010, the employees brainstormed for Tax Season Morale Boosters and the Fundraising Jeans Friday program was just one of several ideas that everyone wanted to participate in”, says Marketing Manager, Vicki M James. The employees pay for the privilege to wear jeans on Fridays and vote every four months for a new charity. “The program was only started for the intent to keep spirits up during tax season, but it was so well received that we continued past April and are now on our second year,” explains COO, James P Latona, CFFA, CFD. “We’ve even had people donate when they weren’t participating; now that’s dedication to social activism!” says VP, Scott T Gerken, CPA. According to Leigh Ann Schoen, Client Service Consultant, who suggested the idea, “I thought it was a great way for us to ‘give back’ and something to look forward to during tax season – it was a win-win.”
“We recognize and appreciate what Alternatives for Battered Women do for women and families in the community with their 24-hour hotline, prevention education and emergency shelter. The organization has a personal connection for some of our employees, including myself, as we have seen first hand how their mission has helped those affected by domestic violence.” stated Marketing Manager, Vicki M James. In the past two years, Thaney & Associates CPAs’ employees have donated $1,502.88 to area charities that have a special meaning for them. Past recipients have been: RADA Charitable Foundation (which supports several area children charities) and Cameron Community Ministries which both are clients of Thaney & Associates’; Mary Cariola Children’s Center where one of the employee’s daughter works; Lollypop Farm where one of the employees, a huge advocate for animals, participates in the annual Barktoberfest and American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which several employees’ extended families have benefited from their quick and assertive action.
For the 2012 tax season, we have voted to support a charity in Florida where our three other firms are located, Kissimmee, Winter Haven and West Palm Beach. “It was brought to our attention that there is a significant problem with youth homelessness within the state, making Florida the 42nd worst state out of 50 in child homelessness. We are surprised and saddened by this news but couldn’t be prouder to support such a worthy crusade.” says Managing Partner, Edward F Thaney, CPA, CVA.
