If you have worked hard to maintain a good figure, only to be plagued by resistant fat deposits that seem completely unaffected by diet and exercise, liposuction may be a valuable solution for you. Liposuction is designed to re-shape and contour your body, trimming inches off of your waist line and providing you with a more attractive overall figure.
Generally speaking, a good candidate for liposuction is anyone who is in good overall health and who has realistic expectations about what liposuction can accomplish. For example, it is not realistic for a woman to expect liposuction – which generally only removes 2-3 pounds of fat – to allow her to fit in clothing that is several sizes smaller.
Not a Weight Loss Procedure
Some people think of liposuction as a method of weight loss for obese patients. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Removing too much fat during a liposuction procedure is dangerous and will greatly increase your odds of encountering complications. Liposuction is meant to be a body contouring procedure for individuals who are already at their target weight. It is designed to eliminate unwanted pockets of fat, not to help people shed a large number of pounds.
Who is Not a Good Candidate?
Below are some factors that may prevent you from being a viable candidate for liposuction:
• Health – If your medical history includes immunodeficiency disorders, blood clots, cardiac arrhythmias, excessive bleeding, or seizure disorders, you will be at a higher risk of complications than a healthy person.
• Medications – Drugs like aspirin, anticoagulants (i.e. Coumadin), or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can make liposuction unsafe for you.
• Inelastic skin – Skin elasticity will have a significant effect on your liposuction results. If your skin is not very elastic, you may experience some degree of wrinkling after liposuction. However, many patients with inelastic skin are quite happy with their new figure despite the slightly wrinkled appearance of their skin.
If you want to have several different areas of your body treated with liposuction, your surgeon may recommend spacing the treatments out. If too many areas are treated in a single session, the relative improvement of each area may be compromised. Smooth, natural-looking results are the goal of every liposuction procedure.
