40th President, Ronald Reagan, was a champion of American Exceptionalism, and his presidency inspired freedom that changed the world. In his 1831 work, Democracy in America, French writer Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, “The position of the Americans is therefore quite exceptional, and it may be believed that no democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one.”

As assistant director of the B. Kenneth Simon Center for American Studies, David Azerrad devotes his time and research to increasing public understanding of America’s founding principles. He also helps to oversee The Heritage Foundation’s “mini-university”, for lectures, seminars, research papers and publications that teach the tenets of the American political tradition to policymakers, elected leaders and the public at large.

Before joining Heritage in September 2010, Azerrad spent two years at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni pushing civic literacy and trying to shake up higher education. In 2007, he was a Publius Fellow at the Claremont Institute in California.

Historically, America has always been seen as a "shining city on a hill", and exempt from historical forces that have affected other countries. In this one-on-one exploratory discussion, Azerrad sheds light about the theme of American Exceptionalism. Even more intriguing is the fact that although the United States is comprised of a melting pot of people from many different nations, there is generally a united common bond for certain self-evident truths, including freedom, inalienable natural and human rights, democracy, civil liberty, private property, and a constitutional government.

America’s formidability has generally been symbolized by its economic might, especially considering that it's economy has produced a quarter of the world’s wealth for the past several decades. In his November 17, 2010 blog posted on The Foundry, Azerrad writes, “America is an exceptional nation, but not because of what it has achieved or accomplished. America is exceptional because, unlike any other nation, it is dedicated to the principles of human liberty, grounded on the truths that all men are created equal and endowed with equal rights”.

A doctoral candidate in politics at the University of Dallas, Azerrad also taught the course “Principles of American Politics” to undergraduates, and is currently writing a dissertation on the foundations of John Locke’s political thought.

Azerrad’s articles, op-eds and editorials have appeared in various newspapers, magazines and academic journals, including The Times of London (as a correspondent in Malaysia), the New York Daily News, and Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy.

A native of Montreal, Quebec in Canada, Azerrad received his Masters of Arts degree in political science from Carleton University in Ottawa, and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from Concordia University in Montreal. Azerrad currently resides in Washington, D.C.
