To the Occupy Wall Street Movement,
Dear Fellow American Brothers and Sisters;
We commend you on the work you are doing on Wall Street, the true capitol of the United States. It is time for real change led by the people.
American Coptic Union Joins " Occupy Wall Street Movement"
Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://www.copts4freedom.com While we believe this is a great start to bringing about real change in the United States and the world, the movement needs to expand in the coming weeks to accommodate the new organizations aligning themselves with the movement. The movement needs to address the failed foreign policy of the United States, which only serves the needs of Wall Street and the elite.
We write to you as the Coptic Christians of Egypt. We are the native people of Egypt that converted to Christianity almost two millennia ago. Our land occupied and stripped away from us by the Arab invaders in 642 AD. Centuries of repression, suppression, and oppression followed. We have been victims of economic strangulation, human rights violations, and genocide for the past 60 years.
The main perpetrators of these violent acts against our people were the former Mubarak regime and various Islamic extremist groups, particularly the Salafis and Muslim Brotherhood.
The United States and Israel kept Mubarak in power for years to do their bidding. The United States provided him with military aid, economic benefits, and military support in return for his commitment to protect US and Israeli interests. He was left to do as he pleased with the Copts.
The United States only called for his resignation when it became clear that there was no way he was going to survive the revolution against him. The Saudis finance the Salafis because they both adhere to the Wahabi school of Islam. The US, in order to protect the vast oil supply in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, gives military and political support to the Saudis, who then give support to the Salafis.
As you’ve read and seen in the past week, the Copts were brutally attacked by the military, Police, and Islamic extremists in Heart of Cairo, Maspero area, for having the nerve to ask for their human rights in their own land. As of now, 65 are dead and more than 500 are in critical condition. This attack would not have happened if the US did not give the green light to the military.
It demonstrates more severely than ever the doubtful role being played by the army. Eyewitness reports are clear that it was firing by the army, followed by the repeated crushing of unarmed demonstrators by an armored car that turned a peaceful demonstration into a violent altercation that left 65 people dead
The military still receives $1.5 billion in US-taxpayer money. The US, in trying to appease the Islamic extremists and Muslim Brotherhood at the expense of the Copts, allowed the military council to issue 11 licenses to Islamist, Jihadist, and terrorist political parties.
President Obama, a sympathizer of Wall Street and the special interests, urged the Copts to “show restraint”. There are many things wrong with this. First, the Copts were the ones who were attacked first during their nonviolent protest. Naturally, any human being would respond with violence when being attacked in order to avoid death. As a supposed follower of Martin Luther King, Obama’s comment is ignorant and insensitive. But most of all, it indicates a hidden agenda. Second, the Copts are the natives of Egypt and, therefore, are justified in their calls for human rights and a secular state in their own land.
We believe the US is trying to set up a government in Egypt that only supports Israel needs. They want the military to be in control and also want a strong Muslim Brotherhood/Salafi presence within the government. This is the same thing as the Mubarak regime. Mubarak was backed by the military and the US, but also had a large number of Brotherhood members in the Parliament. The US wants the same government but with different faces. In this type of situation, the Copts would continue to be raped and murdered while the US reaps its interests.
We ask the brave people, the 99%, at Occupy Wall Street to support our cause for human rights. Your struggle is our struggle because we have the same oppressor. We ask the protesters to bring this issue to the open as the movement expands. The situation in the Middle East won’t change unless the situation in America changes. Thank you and may God be with you in your struggle to bring about real change in the world.
