Aurora, IL – Americana singer-songwriter Ben Sage today announced the release of Plenty of Gold, his third album and first in five years.
Plenty of Gold features 17 original songs spanning a wide array of Americana genres, including country, folk, roots rock, praise and blues. Several tracks revive elements of songs from the doo-wop era to create a fresh, new sound that may be its own sub-genre.
The album kicks off with Still Playing Rock 'n' Roll, a ragged, rowdy salute to rock's pioneers and their enduring legacy. Next up is Sun Power Me, a fun-loving paean to the many benefits of solar power. What follows are love songs, philosophical musings and songs of spiritual reflection, and even more love songs. As the lyrics to one song note, “Take a look at the world and tell me it don’t need love.”
Overall, the album embodies the retro purity of a bygone era in American music with a slightly lo-fi charm.
Sage demonstrates his multi-instrumental chops on this disc, providing lead and backing vocals, lead and rhythm guitar, and performances on any number of supporting instruments, from harmonica and cornet to clave and kazoo. He even employs whistling to brighten the title track, an acoustic ballad with an otherwise dark edge.
Throughout Plenty of Gold, Sage’s melodic, natural voice is strong, supple and adaptable to the specific tune he is performing at the moment. But whether inflected with country twang for the 70s-style trucker ballad, Dialin’ For My Darlin, or pop breathiness for the Beatles-esque In Your Arms, Sage’s unique identity is stamped on every cut. Likewise, his lyrics conjure a multitude of moods and shadings, yet collectively paint the picture of a very singular artist.
Plenty of Gold is available now at CDBaby.com, iTunes.com, LoveBenSage.com, and elsewhere online, for the recession-friendly price of just $9.99. Sage's other releases include, In Word and In Deed (2004) and Troubadour (2005). For inquiries and bookings call Vera 9-5 M-F at 630-892-3978.
