AMVETS/AmeriCorps Kick Starts 2011-2012 Service Year
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tuesday, September 13th marked the official starting date of AMVETS/AmeriCorps’ 2011-2012 service year. With over 60 locations throughout Ohio, AMVETS/AmeriCorps is a nonprofit corporation that provides career, training and employment related services to veterans, active military personnel and members of the National Guard and Reserves and their families.
AMVETS Career Center achieved many triumphs during the 2010-2011 service year, successfully providing assistance to over 1,000 veterans and helping approximately 200 secure placement in fields such as healthcare, transportation and logistics. They also recruited over 100 military-friendly employers to provide career opportunities and hope to achieve greater success this year with the addition of 20 new members to their ranks and the return of six from last year. New members joining this year’s cohort come from Utah, Michigan and Ohio and share a common goal of providing much-needed career services and assistance to veterans. AMVETS Career Center Director, Len Proper, is excited to work with this year’s cohort.
AmeriCorps members serve veterans for a full calendar year with those serving full-time receiving a modest stipend of approximately $1,000/month. AMVETS Career Center is funded this year by the Corporation for National and Community Service, who helps strengthen local communities through service and volunteering. Since its inception in 1993, AmeriCorps has helped improve the communities and lives of millions of people across the United States. Partnering with AmeriCorps for the second consecutive year, AMVETS Career Center is proud to have AmeriCorps’ support in pursuit of its mission to help veterans secure employment. “We have a great working relationship with AmeriCorps and hope to maintain that relationship in the years to come,” says Proper.
AMVETS Career Center is dedicated to doing everything in its power to help veterans across the state of Ohio. “Our basic plan is to help veterans become self-reliant in their careers. We want them to learn the skills necessary to succeed in the work force. We’re extremely proud of what we accomplished last year and I really think we’re going to amaze people with the success we achieve this year,” states Proper.
