AMVETS Career Center Launches Initiative to Get 1,000 Vets Hired
COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Tuesday, November 1st, AMVETS Career Center (ACC) launched its new initiative, Vets 1,000, to get 1,000 Ohio veterans hired over the course of the next year. With November being designated Hire a Veteran Month, ACC will capitalize on the following weeks to raise awareness of their initiative and get more veterans placed in jobs.
Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the unemployment rate in Ohio hovers around 9.7%, the rate for Ohio veterans is approximately 16%, and for young Ohio veterans is about 30%. “We need to be doing more to lower those rates and Vets 1,000 is part of our commitment to doing just that,” says ACC director, Len Proper.
Over the next year, AMVETS Career Center will put on their own career fairs and put on hiring events with the National Guard. ACC will also work with both big and small companies that have hiring needs. “We target businesses that will specify available positions and the skills necessary to perform those jobs and we’ll identify the vets that have those skills and bring them together,” says Proper.
To develop successful partnerships, ACC will reach out to employers and help them overcome resistance to hiring veterans. One of the most common barriers to veterans’ employment is a lack of understanding on employers’ end of the work-related skills veterans come back with from the military, says Proper, and the difficulty many veterans have in communicating those skills to potential employers. AMVETS Career Center services can help veterans overcome these difficulties through services such as resume writing workshops and interviewing skills training.
“If a veteran doesn’t have the skills to perform a certain job, we’ll help them develop those skills or we’ll help them find a different position that’s better suited for them,” says Proper. “It’s important to fix the gap in communication and understanding so that we can put as many vets to work as possible. We’re excited to launch Vets 1,000 and hope to achieve great success.”
