London is an extremely busy city making Central London parking a challenge at times. There are restrictions that apply, usually between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Most streets in London have parking meters although the parking slot may be used only for a limited time (usually 2 hours). Parking, however, is free after 6:30 p.m. most of the time. In many areas of London, parking is available only on a “Pay by Phone” basis. This means that you can only pay through your mobile phone instead of putting money in a parking meter.
Another unique restriction which may affect parking in London is called a Congestion Charge. Certain zones in Central London are designated as high-traffic areas and you may enter, drive through and leave the area between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. only by paying a Congestion Charge of £ 10 every day, except holidays or weekends. Vehicles which are found violating the parking restrictions in London are clamped or towed away. Areas where clamping or towing away are enforced do not have special warning signs and the penalty for having your vehicle towed away can cost up to £ 125.
Parking on most roads is usually reserved for residents of the area who possess permits to park, making it difficult to find a vacant parking slot. This situation makes using private car parks the most convenient way to find parking in London. These car parks are located in places marked with a white “P” on a blue background. Street signs will also indicate the way to a car park, many of which are located close to strategic places like train stations.
The private car parks are operated by companies that specialize in parking systems, such as National Car Parks (NCP), which operates many facilities throughout the UK. They can be recognized by a yellow sign with “NCP” in bold, black letters. The NCP car park on Brewer Street in London is in the center of the city's theatreland and a 2-minute walk to Carnaby Street, London's famous shopping area.
To park, you drive up to the entrance, get a ticket and park your vehicle. However, parking space in the car park can be pre-booked online. By booking online, the car park offers discounts as much as 25% off the parking fee. To make things even easier, the car park has number plate recognition for pre-booked vehicles. Cameras at the entrance scan the car's number plate and a ticket is issued automatically. Pre-booking also makes it more convenient to exit the parking area. You just drive up to the exit, insert the ticket in the machine slot and drive off. For those who haven't pre-booked, payment upon exit can be made in cash or via credit and debit card.
Pre-booking at a car park like the one operated by NCP can be done as late as one day before the slot is needed. The booking can also be amended or cancelled 24 hours before the parking slot is used. All things considered, using a private car park is clearly the easy choice for Central London parking.
