Communication is derived from Latin word “commincare” which means to share or to make common. It is an inner urge of every organism to socialize. Communication happens between the whole universe from animal, tress to even the celestial bodies but only human beings enjoy the privilege of having a common language to communicate.
Communication is a two-way dynamic process which starts from selection of ideas in the mind of the source that sends the message which reaches the receiver through a suitable channel.
An effective communication consists of not only words but a voice tone and as much as 55 percent of body language. Business communication is another type of communication. In business communication, both formal and informal line of communication exists. The communication which deliberately exists in an organization and in which a definite path is followed can be termed a formal communication. Informal communication is that type of communication which occurs in an organization as a result to feed the social needs of humans and the information thus passed is never reliable. A communication process in which the message interpreted by the receiver is same as that of the message sent by the sender of the message is a sign of effective communication. The hurdles which restrict the easy flow of communication are called communication barriers.
These communication barriers can occur in any of the four elements of communication as listed below:
1. SENDER: A sender is the initial point of a communication process. He is to select an idea from a jungle of thought scattered in his mind. Words to present your idea should always be selected while keeping in mind the knowledge level, mind set, cultural and social backgrounds of the receiving audience in order to avoid misinterpretation of the actual message acting a communication barrier. After selecting an idea he should also encode, present and transmit the data in accordance to circumstances and target audience.
2. MESSAGE: An apt presentation is what separates raw data from a message. There should not be overflow of information. If should be strictly concise as per the capacity of the audience. The words of message being delivered should be chosen with great care so as to avoid linguistic or semantic communication barriers. The language being used should be familiar even to layman. There should be minimal use of abbreviations, jargons and technical words. One of the major communication barriers faced while communicating one’s message is use of different language and accent.
3. CHANNEL: The communication channel is the medium through which a sender sends his message to the receiver. It is the life-blood of any organization. Channel should be feasible, common and within the reach of target audience. It should be free of all sort of noise, physical and organizational barriers. The channels should be chosen keeping in mind the type of communication, that is, whether it is formal or informal in nature. The channel should be such which is cost effective and accessible to the target audience.
4. RECEIVER: The receiver of a message is the person or group of persons for whom the message has been originally designed and delivered. It becomes the prime responsibility of the receiver to try his best to decode the message in its original form only. The feedback given by receiver to the sender of the message indicates that the receiver has received and understood the message with its exact denotation. Thus demonstrating the completion a barrier free communication between the two parties and gratifying the motive of whole communication process.
Communication barriers are the hurdles which can be faced at different stages of a communication process and should be overlooked to have an effective communication.
