Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is a procedure typically performed by a plastic surgeon or an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat surgeon) under local or general anesthesia. In the process, the surgeon reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose and surrounding structures of the face, which changes an individual's appearance. Although "nose jobs" are often performed for cosmetic reasons, they are also an important treatment for medical problems.
These can include congenital abnormalities and deformities of the nose, certain types of severe nose bleed disorders, and specific types of sleep apnea in adults. In addition to reshaping the visible (to the external world) parts of the nose, a rhinoplasty procedure can also be used to improve airflow throughout the "nasopharynx," or the region of the nose which is contiguous with the oral cavity and the airway. This helps some individuals by reducing the effort required to breathe.
Due to the variety of patient medical demands and the important cosmetic placement of the nose, surgical techniques vary. Rhinoplasty techniques are divided broadly into "open" versus "closed" categories. Access to the nose is achieved typically either inside the nose, or with a combination of incisions inside and outside the nose. Excellent cosmetic results can typically be achieved, as the majority of the scars from the procedure are hidden inside the nose, and thus not apparent.
For most patients, it is possible to return home after the procedure the next day. Typically, patients remain at home for at least one week after the procedure. Sutures are typically removed at day four to day five, and any cast which is required is also removed at around one week. While specifics will vary from case to case, generally a patient can expect to require dressing for the nose for several days to weeks after surgery. Because of the nature of the tissue in the nose, which includes bone and cartilage, healing can be slow.
While initial swelling should disappear in several weeks, inflammation and swelling from the surgical operation and associated procedures may take significant time to dissipate. In some individuals, skin and surrounding structures may take several months to up to a year to assume the final shape and appearance. Follow-up with the plastic surgeon at one month, two months, six months, and one year is recommended for all patients.
