Analytical Study by SPEX CertiPrep examines the BPA and Phthalate levels of several popular commercial bottled waters in comparison with municipal tap water and various samples of laboratory water from commercial sources and from de-ionized filtration systems.
SPEX CertiPrep has released a new white paper on the presence of Bisphenol-A (BPA) and Phthalates in water from various laboratory and consumer sources.
Bottled water is a multibillion dollar a year business with projected growth to over $168 billion dollars in sales worldwide by 2012. In 2007, the average American drank over 29 gallons of bottled water, which amounts to over 8.8 billion gallons of bottled water consumed in the US. Bottled water has become the second largest consumed beverage in the country, behind carbonated beverages.
The goal of the study was to examine the BPA and phthalate levels of several popular commercial bottled waters in comparison with municipal tap water and various samples of laboratory water from commercial sources and from de-ionized filtration systems. In addition, the study attempted to discover whether the phthalate and BPA levels increased after being heated for one week at temperatures equivalent to those reached inside an automobile during the summer.
