Fort Lauderdale, Fl - What do Mario Betto and Angelina Jolie have in common? They are both performers and also have a desire to promote humanitarian aid to make the world a better place. Angelina’s performance in the 2003 movie “Beyond Borders” actually sparked the concept of Hairstylists for Humanity…in the movie theatre. Says Betto, Founder of Hairstylists for Humanity, “There I was in the movie theatre watching Angelina on the big screen and my life changed unexpectedly. It was as if my head was zipped open and the concept of Hairstylists for Humanity was planted. I knew I had to follow this calling. I immediately went home, went on-line and found out how to incorporate a non-profit organization. Two weeks later, we were reaching out to the community”.
Hairstylists for Humanity was founded by Mario Betto in 2003, in the beginning the organization provided beauty and grooming services to men and women in homeless shelters, shelters for abused women, hospice for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, oncology departments at hospitals, children with special needs and senior citizens living on fixed incomes.
In November of 2009, Hairstylists for Humanity extended its outreach to include educational opportunities to individuals who cannot afford to improve their lives or the lives of their families via education. The Hairstylists for Humanity Scholarship Program will provide scholarships to eligible individuals to receive education and licensing for the Nail Specialist, Facial Specialist and Cosmetology programs. We believe that education is power. This new program will empower individuals who do not have the financial resources to improve their lives for themselves and their families via education.
Hairstylists for Humanity was recently featured in the book endorsed by Mary J Blige and Former President Carter “How To Be An Everyday Philanthropist”.
One of the ongoing fundraisers is the original musical, “Combing Through Life’s Tangles”, which was written by Mario Betto who also performs in the production. Mario is a playwright, actor, composer and singer. www.combingthroughlifestangles.com and www.missfinesse.com
