YouTube is finally going Hollywood. The hit YouTube video, “My New Haircut”, will be adapted into a major film, according to executive producer Ankur Jain.
The video, originally created by film producer Brett Tietjen, features Brett impersonating a man stereotypical of the “guido culture”, made famous by reality TV shows like the “Jersey Shore”. The video has received over 27 million hits to date.
“We are hoping that this is going to be the first of many that will show Hollywood that the future of content is going to come from internet-generated material,” Jain said. “One of the exciting facts is that the YouTube world is going to mash with the Hollywood world.”
Producers Scott Mednick, of 300 and Beerfest, and Galen Walker, of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, acquired the rights to the movie from Jain, who raised $5 million towards beginning production.
Tietjen reached out to Jain, who then came up with the idea of pitching the movie to major Hollywood producers as the first film to capitalize on the success of Youtube. Jain hopes to merge the two worlds of YouTube and Hollywood.
The film will be one of the first mainstream releases to be executive produced by a college student and will star Tietjen and other Hollywood actors. It is scheduled to be released later this year or early next year.
