Another School Thinking Their Above The Law

My name is Richard Karns and I go to North Posey High School and I think I have a very important story that needs to get out. Just today, December 10, 2010 we took a anonymous tobacco survey that was clearly said by the school's counselor to be 100% anonymous and secure. Well, upon completing the survey I wrote a very short opinion on the last page that said "F*** You, What A Waste Of Money". I regret using "F*** You" and acknowledge I could have used something more professional than that, but I am protected in using that under the 1st Amendment and that was in no way, shape, or form directed to anyone in particular and it is certainly not a threat and did not offend anyone. The counselor noticed that I had written something in the packet but did not confront me or notify me that I should not write in the package. So I proceeded to turn the packet in. The next period came around and I got called down to the assistant principle's office and was notified I would be suspended for two days. I unfortunately did not try to defend myself or explain or proceed to ask if they knew they were breaking Federal and State law (Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA)) and that I am protected by the 1st Amendment like I said earlier. I, by any, means do not do drugs, but let's say I did and I did not write anything in the packet but the counselor thought somehow I did write something, she would have went through and most likely read. After reviewing it, the counselor along with the whole school administration would have known I did drugs. What a major embarrassment as well as a breach of privacy. It's no wonder why students joke around and do not answer these surveys honestly because they aren't really anonymous. It make me wonder wonder how many other surveys were read and what information the school has found out. I am contacting you to hopefully get this story out and hopefully have the school understand they are not above the law like they always seem to be. I see stories all the time that are aired on 14, 25, 7, and national news about schools breaking laws or going way beyond reasonable punishment and so on and I think its high time North Posey High School get a lesson in upholding the law and respecting students and their privacy.
