Action on Smoking and Health Uses Fear to Accelerate Donations in The Face of Overwhelming Science About Electronic Cigarettes

Atlanta, Georgia-(January 18, 2011) In a letter sent out to its donors (http://tveca.com/tveca_ashlegacy.html), Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) determined that in order to garner more “tax-deductable contributions” that it would mislead the public and its donors rather than report the actual science and facts about the electronic cigarette-a product that now 1 million Americans are using without a single incidence of harm. In its letter, ASH falsely states that electronic cigarettes “emit a deadly mixture of nicotine (an addictive drug which contributes to heart attacks), propylene glycol (a respiratory irritant which can cause respiratory tract infections) and a wide variety of carcinogens and other toxins). Not only is this false it is inverse to the FDA and EPA’s approval of propylene glycol for decades stating “Upon reviewing the available toxicity information, the Agency (EPA) has concluded that there are no endpoints of concern for oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure to propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol”. Also, in over 19 scientific studies of the electronic cigarette, including the FDA’s own 5/2009 study of the electronic cigarette, there has never been found any carcinogen or toxin at any levels harmful to humans. Why would ASH make these false claims? Money.
ASH Take Donations From A “Stop Smoking” Drug Linked to Suicides
ASH touts itself as an organization established to “reduce the needless toll of smoking” and “protect nonsmokers from the clearly-established dangers of secondhand tobacco smoke” yet it has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from Pfizer whose stop-smoking drug Chantix has led to over 100 suicides and hundreds of attempted suicides and so worried the FDA that it had to produce a video warning the public about Chantix possibly leading to “suicidal ideation” and “suicide”. How does ASH justify not only taking monies from Pfizer but spending its donors monies to fight against a product, the electronic cigarette, that emits no second hand, is only comprised of five FDA/EPA approved main ingredients (propylene glycol, glycerol, nicotine, water, flavorings) and actually has over 1 million Americans NOT smoking the one product we know will kill them-tobacco cigarettes.
The TVECA Is Asking For All Media Sources to Investigate Stop Smoking Institutions
The Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association (TVECA) is calling on all media sources to start to investigate stop-smoking institutions such as ASH and The American Legacy Foundation that have taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies yet are fiercely and falsely accusing electronic cigarettes and the electronic cigarette industry of selling a product that contains toxins and is “deadly” to humans as after 1 million users and 1 billion uses of an electronic cigarette, there has not been a SINGLE incidence of harm but rather 1 million Americans not using the one product we know will kill them, the smoking of traditional tobacco cigarettes. To ban this product will send these 1 million Americans back to big tobacco products (which cause the death of 400,000 Americans annually) and big pharma products that already have killed and harmed thousands. Journalists have the responsibility to investigate this shameful act by these so called “stop-smoking” groups and investigate the links to the donations from pharmaceutical companies whose market share is currently being eroded by the electronic cigarette.
About the Electronic Cigarette
The electronic cigarette (e-cig) is a tobacco product that first came to the United States in early 2007. Developed in China, the e-cig is comprised of only a battery and five main ingredients (propylene glycol, glycerol, nicotine, water and flavoring) that work together to provide the user their desired nicotine mimicking the same hand to mouth ritual that cannot be mimicked by traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT’s) such as gums and lozenges that have up to a 92% failure rate. The e-cig produces no “smoke” as there is not the burning of tobacco that is associated with traditional cigarettes and none of the 6,000 chemicals or 66 toxins that comprise cigarette smoke. There are now over 1,000,000 e-cig users nationally with annual sales topping $200,000,000.
