I am a native of Apex, NC and I know that over the years the bat population has grown due to the building and expansion of Apex. Now I would not say that this has caused it but what it has done is given the bat more opportunities to find roosting sites in Apex homes. I remember as a kid when Apex was still considered a rural community that you would see hundreds of bats flying around street lamps at night and this was mostly in part due to the surrounding rural areas that were used as farming land. The open fields would bring bat in to feed on the mosquito’s population. There are two major things that still bring bat into the apex area and that is water sources and the abundance of street lamps that attract mosquitoes. The down side of this is that many people will experience at one time or another encounter with bats outside or even in their house. If my calculations and records are correct, last year we performed over 48 bat exclusions in Apex and in most cases the size of the colonies ranged from 25- 200 bats per exclusion. There is one neighborhood in Apex that I will not mention that has an ongoing problem with bats. And we seem to find ourselves out their every year excluding bats from homes. If you are having a problem with bats in your home attic or anywhere, it’s best to get them out before they make your home their home.
