This morning, Apple’s latest handheld wonder — probably the iPhone 5 — will take the stage in the hand of newly minted Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple’s iPhone unveiling. It’s likely to be a career moment for Cook and an important turning point for the beloved, and sometimes beleaguered, phone.
UPDATE: Apple has unveiled the iPhone 4S. It will be available for pre-order on Oct. 7 and available to purchase on Oct. 14. And like previous versions of the iPhone, the iPhone 4S will retail for $199 for a 16 GB model and $299 for a 32 GB model.
Since Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, it has captured the imagination of millions of customers around the world. Yet, the world of technology has undergone significant change since we saw our first “think-do,” touchscreen based hardware from Apple. Most significantly, Google Android happened. After getting off to a slow start in 2008 with T-Mobile’s G1, the platform has skyrocketed, eating up a significant portion of the smartphone market and showing consumers that virtually any other company could build a touch-screen slab phone.
The Apple iPhone 5, which may or may not show up at this morning’s event, could be Apple’s best hope for recapturing its momentum and leadership position in the smartphone space. Without something spectacular, it’s likely the next iPhone will do well but not much to wrest the smartphone lead from the likes of HTC, Motorola and Samsung.
For Cook, this will be his first big moment since Apple founder and former CEO Steve Jobs stepped down. Cook has been on the Apple stage before, but to say that all eyes will be on Cook and his performance this go-around would be an understatement.
