"Approaching Neverland" Named Best Memoir by NABE

Each year, and for the past 25 years, the North American Bookdealers Exchange (NABE) presents some of the finest books published by its members the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award. This year's recipient for Best Memoir was awarded to “Approaching Neverland: A Memoir of Epic Tragedy and Happily Ever After” by author Peggy Kennedy. No small accomplishment for any author, particularly one who has bravely bared her family's history. A history that was held (understandably) private for decades. That's the way it was with topics on bipolar disorder, AIDS, and homosexuality. No longer.

Kennedy survived the often terrifying, always concealed tragedy of her mother's mental illness. She, along with her siblings and their father, managed to use the bonds of love and humor to sustain themselves as they walked their journey during a time when mental illness was neither discussed nor understood. Hers is a story of both amazing resilience and, ultimately, 'happily ever after'.

Now that she has bared her truths to the world, Kennedy is on a continuing mission to educate the rest of the world about bipolar disorders, AIDS, and the need for a more open dialogue for the people who deal with such tragedies, along with those who love them. Her passion for helping others by way of her own experiences is certainly worthy of any and all accolades she has received as a result of her bold honesty and untainted view of a world that might have broken the spirit of the very strongest among us. The Pinnacle Book Achievement Award is most certainly her due.
