Are Landline Phones Becoming Obsolete?
Do you find that you’ve become so dependent on your mobile phone these days that you don’t even need a landline anymore?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 11, 2011 --
Do you find that you’ve become so dependent on your mobile phone these days that you don’t even need a landline anymore? You’re not alone, in Australia the trend is strong with the number of Australian mobile phone users who do not own landlines increasing from 8% in 2008 to 14% in 2010 .
HomeSource Joint Managing Director Pia Vogel says “this raises the question of whether landline phones will soon become entirely obsolete and we will continue to see a snowballing trend away from landlines towards mobile phones and smart phones.”
Ms Vogel added that “during tough economic times, it’s not just the practicality of using your mobile phone for everything. It’s also that it makes financial sense to really think about how much you use that landline, and if it’s worth what you’re paying.”
This is indeed a global phenomenon – a recent trend survey by the International Telecommunications Union shows that between 2001 to 2011 the global mobile phone subscription rate per 100 inhabitants increased from 15.5% to 86.7% .
In the USA, a Harris Interactive survey shows the use of mobile phones is increasing at an ever increasing rate while the number of traditional landline phones is decreasing. Now one in five American adults does not own a landline . The same trend can be seen in the UK with statistics showing that it has been a decrease in the number of landlines per 100 inhabitants from 59% to 53% over past 10 years .
This global movement towards mobile phone usage is further reinforced via a major study by Morgan Stanley that predicted the mobile web will be bigger than desktop Internet use by 2015 as a result of most smart phone users spending just 45% of their time on their phones making calls.
So what does the trend away from landline use mean for consumers?
“If we are going to rely on our mobile phones, choose your service provider and deals wisely. Cost blowouts because you didn’t ask about hidden costs can be a nasty surprise.
But if you shop around you can avoid these issues” said Ms Vogel.
Ms Vogel added that “today’s society has become so dependent on their mobile phones for daily life that a problem with your phone could cripple your business and personal activities until the phone is fixed or replaced.”
