What are the basic requisites to be a consumer Well one thing is to consume, consumption is the one activity which every living organism on this planet has to do. Every living organism has to consume something or the other in order to keep the cycle of life moving. Consumption is an act of life. Willingly or unwillingly all of us consume the air around us, the oxygen which helps us live, the resources around us and so on. So we are all consumers that is for sure.

So what is this good consumer and bad consumer One thing for sure is that nobody is a bad consumer by choice, except a select few who get pleasure out of it. And nobody is a good consumer all the time, simply because we dont try to be one. Why is it so difficult to be a good consumer Because good consumers stand out in a crowd, they are identified easily. We human beings are shy of publicity, not all, but a majority of us shun away from being known in public or standing out in a crowd for consumer complaint . This hinders the evolution of a good consumer.

A good consumer is one who keeps himself well informed. Knowledge is power. And knowledge of things around you and the products and the companies around you are your primary source of power. It is a consumers basic Karma to know what he wants, which variety he wants and how much he wants. There are sales people always to help us out by selling the most expensive of goods. That attitude has risen out of a myth that an expensive product is a quality product. But theres more to the cost of a product other than its quality. There is something known as brand name which is a major determining factor of the cost of a product. The better the brand name, the more expensive its goods are. Coming back to the consumers duty, he has to know what he wants, so in that case if he were to buy a product, say BE54-I and there a number of companies say from A-Z selling the same product, he should be aware of which company is best with respect to his point of view. Knowledge about this can be obtained by interacting with people, asking other family members, shoppers at the supermarket, all with a casual question. Many people are more than happy to help a fellow consumer.

Once he is armed with knowledge a consumer is focused on acquiring it. He also has a list of next best options in mind in case the product is not available.

Another important thing that a good consumer should do is, help out fellow consumer, if a product or service is not good, dont feel shy and if require can go for customer complaints also. Speak out about it. The chances of getting into trouble are nil. This country offers freedom of speech. So speak out your mind and tell the other people what a bad or good product that is. This way you will spread awareness, maybe even persuade the manufacturer of a bad product to rectify his fault and improve the quality of the products.

Third thing is a tricky one. It should be done in cases when the consumer is extremely upset. It is a development over the second. This is defacing the product or its service provider in the presence of other consumers. This should be mainly practiced in places which provide services and not goods. The reason is that goods may or may not be manufactured at that place. But service always is. Do not feel bad about it. Suppressing that anger will make you throw it out on family and colleagues. There is a double advantage in showing it out to the service provider, the consumers around you will take your lead and stop approaching him. The impact of your blasting him in public will give him sense as to how to behave with consumers. The customer is always king.

There is one final thing which could lead to the unbecoming of a good consumer. Unless you are sure about the product, do not say anything negative about it. But once you are sure that it is of bad quality you can deface it as badly as you want. Another issue is finding fault. If a service provider or manufacturer is sincere about the fault and assures you that it would not happen and makes up for the fault in some way or the other, limit your criticism about it, give him another chance and when you say something negative, also mention the way he tried to make up to you. This gives the producer a fighting chance. And he will remember it. He should obviously.
Consumers rules the world, without them, there is no need for absolutely anything on this planet.
