A recent article by Dr. Mercola, a well-known MD who likes to buck the system of conventional medicine, details why you may very well be wasting your time exercising like we've all been taught. His recommendation is to follow what's called Peak 8 Exercise.
Dr. Brad Pearce and Dr. Mandy Pearce, owners of Pewaukee Family Chiropractic, recommend this form of exercise provided you have been cleared by your doctor to perform at this level.
The premise of Peak 8 Exercise is to work your body intensely for 30 seconds and follow that up with 90 seconds of rest. This has been shown time and time again to burn more calories and to keep the furnace burning much longer than moderate or low intensity exercise over a much longer duration. Not to get into the weeds here, but Peak 8 exercise uses more fast-twitch muscle fiber than endurance exercises which burns more calories.
Here is a summary of how to perform the Peak 8 Exercise:
1. Pick an exercise that you can do safely even when you are extremely fatigued. An exercise bike or elliptical rider are probably the safest. If you're already in decent shape and used to training hard, you could choose sprinting or any other form of intense exercise.
2. Warm up for 5 minutes to get the muscles ready to work.
3. After warming up, go all out as hard as you can for 30 seconds. Your goal is to get your heart rate near or even slightly beyond your 'calculated maximal heart rate'. Your maximal heart rate is calculated as: 220 minus your age. E.G. 180 for a 40 year old and 170 for a fifty year old.
4. Rest and recover for 90 seconds.
5. Go all out again for 30 seconds.
6. Repeat this cycle. Initially you may only want to start out with 2 or 3 cycles as this is very intense. Gradually you want to build up to 8 cycles. This is where the term Peak 8 comes from.
7. Cool down for 3-5 minutes
8. Stretch and follow your workout with a healthy meal.
It's recommended that you do this 3 times per week. The best part of this program is that it only takes 20 minutes, so every one can squeeze an extra 20 minutes out of their day three times per week.
In addition to this exercise, it's very important that you lift weights properly a few times per week. How you should do that is for another article.
