(Free-Press-Release.com) September 7, 2010 -- You can attend time management workshops until the cows come home and still be working round the clock, stuck in procrastination or suffering death by deadline. These coaching practicums are time wasted when the real problem lies on a much deeper level.

The Harvard Business Review has identified four psychological profiles which make up extreme time abusers and the challenges these highly inflexible individuals demand of managers or coaches.

The Pre-emptive - The rarest of them all these types compulsively beat the clock, finishing projects weeks before deadline, appearing always to be cool and in control. A godsend, you might think, but after a period of time Pre-empters bring down morale because they are unaware how their behaviour affects others who see them as lone sharks, unhelpful or toadies.

Research reveals that this type is usually formed as a result of a disruptive childhood where parental requests were arbitrarily changed. The Pre-emptive, to create order, does what is required quickly and brilliantly to counteract this.

To override their fear of disorder the Pre-emptive should be placed in a position of leadership where they have to be more sociable, mentoring others and where flexibility is key.

The People Pleaser – On paper these “can’t say no” smilers seem ideal but their fear of confronting authority means they are always busy on unproductive projects and overwhelm themselves. With a childhood where feelings were not sufficiently valued they subordinate their desires to please others although resentment, due to lack of recognition, usually follows.

Regular meetings to discuss realistic workloads, strong boundaries and positive feedback all go to help the People Pleaser work at their peak.

The Perfectionist – these hold people hostage for indefinite periods of time due to their anguish over perfection. They take more time than allotted to satisfy extremely unrealistic internal standards of excellence. Concerned with control, ritual and bending the rules, the Perfectionist can be hard to work alongside.

This comes from a background where unachievably high standards were expected and failure to meet this created a deep sense of inferiority for which they must overcompensate.
Probably the most complex and difficult to manage the Perfectionist can be helped by simply “flooding” them with frequent low doses of evaluations – progress, reports, updates etc thus lowering their fear of final approval.

The Procrastinator – Probably the most common time abuser who finds a million things to do rather than the task at hand. Working to the secret fear that they can’t do the job before them and riddled with self doubt which, ironically, only gets worse if they receive public acclaim; self sabotage is a common theme.

A childhood of over-praising where corrective feedback was never given leads to feelings of an exalted self opinion that the sufferer lives in dread of losing.

By forcing the Procrastinator to confront their fears and help them accept that their will be glitches gives them license to lower his anxiety about failure.
