Are Your Holiday Toys Dangerous

Boca Raton, FL – The Hollander Law Firm (www.hollanderlawfirm.com) wants to keep your kids safe this holiday season (whether buying a toy or receiving a toy) by providing you with resources and information on toy safety. In the United States alone, there over three billion toys are sold each year.

Many toys can cause choking hazards, burn hazards, suffocation dangers, or even contain lead. This past week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (http://www.wsvn.com/news/articles/local/21006166654774/) seized a number of hazardous toys before they made their way into homes this holiday season.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html), an independent government organization that monitors consumer product safety, more than 250,000 children were seen in emergency rooms for toy-related injuries in 2010. Also, approximately 17 children died last year from toy-related injuries.

The World Against Toys Causing Harm Inc (W.A.T.C.H) { http://toysafety.org/worstToyList_index.shtml} released its annual “10 Worst Toys” list. The list includes nationally known names, such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Power Rangers”, being sold by major manufacturers and retailers including Toys R US, K MART and Amazon.com.

Some things that you can do to stay safe:

* Make sure toys are age appropriate
* Buy toys from a reputable store and a reputable brand within that store
* Check for toy recalls by visiting: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prerel.html or http://www.safekids.org/our-work/recalls/2011/
* Be sure to check the warning labels for safety information.
* Check all toys regularly for damage, repair or discard toy
* Check toys for loose or small parts that children can cause choking if swallowed

* Young children should not be permitted to play with marbles, coins, scissors, balloons, jacks, small balls or any small treasures/prizes
* Be sure that all fabric toys are flame resistant and flame retardant

Parents and caregivers need to know what dangers to look for when they purchase toys for children during the holiday season and year-round. Remember to think safety first when purchasing toys for children.
