Initiative Filed to Enact Arizona-Style Immigration Reform[/n]

Californians will soon have a chance to enact a California version of Arizona’s S.B. 1070 Immigration Reform law through a proposed initiative filed with the California Attorney General’s office.

The Support Federal Immigration Law Act is modeled after the Arizona law, but tailored to the California penal code. In addition, specific consideration was given to the opinion authored by federal district Judge Susan Bolton in United States of America v State of Arizona.

“We are confident that our initiative not only strengthens the ability of state and local law enforcement to protect all of us from dangerous criminals, but it will also withstand any test of its constitutionality,” said Michael Erickson, the initiative’s proponent.

“Californians are under attack from a growing wave of drug related, gang violence. Now that Arizona courageously has resolved to crack down on the drug cartels in their state, we may presume that the murderous warlords will seek a safe haven in our state,” continued Erickson. “Frankly, under the circumstances, we no longer have the time for the phony political posturing and fence sitting that substitutes for real leadership on this issue.”

Noting that illegal immigration costs the state of California “tens of billions annually in education, health care, and incarceration,” Erickson scolded politicians as not being serious about solving our fiscal crisis when they “refuse to provide anything other than safe, poll driven clichés on this issue.”

Michael Erickson continued: “The exploitation of illegal immigrant labor, which also suppresses the wages of American workers, is a moral and economic stain on our state. We the people are not going to remain silent any longer, while the politicians continue in effect to do the bidding of drug cartels and sweatshop owners who benefit the most from the non-enforcement of our own federal immigration law.”

The full text of the proposed initiative can be found at: www.supportimmigration.org and on the Attorney General’s website at: http://ag.ca.gov/initiatives/activeindex.php?active=A

Michael Erickson is an attorney and chairman of Support Federal Immigration Law Committee, the sponsors of the initiative.
