As Employers Get Meaner, Graduates Head Abroad – Where the Grass Is Greener!
As Employers Get Meaner, Graduates Head Abroad – Where the Grass Is Greener!
With graduate unemployment hitting a 15 year high, it’s no surprise that the class of 2011 is looking overseas for jobs.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 12, 2011 --
Whilst the recession has officially been over for some time, students are still facing difficulty finding jobs after graduation. While more graduate jobs are being advertised, the demand for these jobs is still, easily, outstripping supply.
But when one door closes – another window opens. Teaching English abroad (TEFL) is rapidly growing in popularity, and is seen by graduates as a means to escape the doom and gloom of the UK, in order to find worthwhile employment overseas.
Bryony Parker, an i-to-i TEFLer, graduated with a 2.1 from Coventry University – then struggled to find employment. She decided to get TEFL qualified and escaped the dire circumstances in the UK by heading overseas. She said: “Finding a graduate job in the UK is becoming increasingly competitive and a massive struggle for most graduates that I know.”
Jessica Armstrong, who has just started work in Thailand after volunteering in Uganda, states: “There aren’t as many prospects for fresh graduates compared to in the past – and also, there’s so much competition!”
Not only is teaching English one of the most exciting and rewarding ways of experiencing new cultures, fist hand, but TEFLers also get to immerse themselves in a way of life that tourists can only dream of; whilst earning cold, hard cash! But that’s not all: teaching abroad is a prime opportunity to build relations with local communities, meet fantastic new friends and develop new life skills – a sure fire way to impress future employers!
Claire Wilson recently graduated from Brighton University and immediately ran into difficulty finding a job. However, she completed an i-to-i TEFL course and enrolled on an i-to-i ‘Teach in China Internship’ – and hasn’t looked back since! Clare said: “The UK job situation for graduates, (or lack of it!), is the whole reason I'm in China! After graduating, I worked in a chocolate shop then several depressing offices because that's all the work I could get. I've got a good degree, but the way things are at the moment, you have to start planning your future employability from about 14. Shame I didn't realise this until I was 23!”
“I think that doing a TEFL course has: A) Given me another qualification for my CV, B) Been an amazing adventure, C) Let me escape my parents’ house (where neither I, nor my pile of debts, were getting anywhere). I’m sure that TEFL, and my subsequent jobs in China, will make me more employable not only back home, but also globally.”
To become a TEFL teacher, you don’t need any previous teaching experience, or the ability to speak another language. All you need is a degree in any discipline and the ability to speak English fluently. TEFL courses with i-to-i range from 20 hours to 140 and start at just £139. All courses have been specifically developed to give graduates the skills and confidence they need to make their TEFL experience a success!
