LOCAL BUSINESS COMMITS TO KEEPING KIDS SAFE AND PARENTS REASSURED
The safety of a child is always of chief concern to parents, but with the recent attempted abduction of an Astoria boy, this has never been more relevant.
In late October, a trench coat wearing suspect grabbed the boy by the arm and said “come here, go with me.” While the child’s parents luckily intervened before the man could harm the boy, the incident struck fear in the hearts of many local parents.
In an effort to help ease concerns, Omni Martial Arts is offering a free family safety workshop for parents and kids on Friday, December 4th at 6:30 PM. The class will cover bully prevention, self protection techniques, avoiding dangerous situations and dealing with strangers.
“The mother of one of my students approached me about how worried she was after hearing the news of the attempted abduction,” said Omni Martial Arts owner, Sensei Julio Rivera.
“From the day we opened, we always focused on listening to the needs of the community, so a safety workshop parents could take with their children seemed like something everyone could use.”
Attendees will use role playing to learn how to deal with a number of scenarios. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event at Omni Martial Arts, 35-08 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria, NY 11105. Rivera says he teaches his students to avoid dangerous situations, but knows they’ll be better prepared than most if they do find themselves in a bad spot.
“I want my students to stay safe, but if, God forbid, they need to protect themselves, my hope is they’ll be able to react quickly and get home safe.”
