FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Medina, Ohio, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) December 5, 2011 -- The story of her 12-year-old dog “Gus” earned a St. Franxis Xavier student first place in this year’s Top Dog Contest sponsored by Medina County Auditor Michael E. Kovack.
Maggie Cavanaugh wrote the winning essay, the tale of how her sheltie/shepherd mix became part of her family after a near-death experience. She was among student writers honored Dec. 1 at the County Administration Building and will have the privilege of giving Gus dog license No. 1 for the coming year along with other prizes.

All fourth-grade students throughout Medina County are encouraged to write an essay about why their dog is the “Top Dog” of Medina County. Students who finished second through sixth were, in order: Ali Scalera, Franklin Elementary; Katie Lawson, Garfield Elementary; Erin Keller, Sharon Elementary; Aidan Spitler, H.G. Blake Elementary; and Maygan Harmison, Hickory Ridge Elementary. They received dog licenses Nos. 2-6 as well as additional prizes.

The winning essays and pictures can be viewed at www.medinacountyauditor.org. The Top Dog Contest was created to promote the annual dog-licensing season, which began Dec. 1 and continues through Jan. 31. During this time, all licenses must be renewed or new tags must be purchased. Licensing a dog is not only state law, but also a dog’s best chance of being returned home, should it become lost.

Dog licenses may be purchased at local stores, veterinarians’ offices and online. For a complete list of locations or to order online, visit www.medinacountyauditor.org.
