“Austria Pop-Up” New York!
The Austrian Tourist Office will be opening a Pop-Up Store in the heart of New York City's most fashionable neighborhood, Nolita. This "Austria Flagship Store" will open its doors at the Openhouse Gallery on Mulberry Street from October 5 - 19, 2011. The Austria Pop-Up will be open Sun - Thu from 12 pm to 9 pm and Fri - Sat from 12 pm to 10 pm.
Begin your Austria travel experience in this unique display of Imperial history, stunning art and architecture and music.
Guests will be able to experience true Viennese coffeehouse culture at the temporary Cafe Sacher offering Viennese coffee specialties and, of course, the famous Original Sacher-Torte, a sinfully delicious chocolate cake. Or you can also nosh on Apfelstrudel, another staple of dessert menus in Austria and Grandma’s kitchen. Coffee specialties will be US$ 5; desserts ( Original Sacher Torte, Apfelstrudel) will be US$ 6. Part of the Café Sacher’s proceeds will be donated to City Harvest.
As important as the culinary delicacies are in a Viennese coffeehouse, it is also a lot about the ambiance and the service. In a slow-food, slow-pace kind of way, take a break from the hustle and bustle of New York City streets, lean back comfortably and enjoy your newspaper over a cup of coffee under an old-world chandelier. Sip your coffee from original Café Sacher cups on marble table tops, and feel like you had just crossed the Atlantic. Meet fellow travelers, Austria aficionados and revel in an authentic experience.
Need a savory treat after coffee and cake indulgence? Sure! Visit the Austrian Deli and sample some delicious pumpkin seed oil or artisanal vinegars by Gölles... and, well, if you need something sweet again, handcrafted chocolates from Zotter, Manner wafers or original Austrian Christmas cookies.
In cooperation with the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, KHM, the Austria Pop-Up will showcase some of the masterpieces of one of the world’s greatest art museums. The reopening of this venerable museum’s Kunstkammer “Chamber of Wonders” in December 2012 is one of the most anticipated museum events worldwide.
Swarovski Crystal Worlds present themselves shiny and sparkly, with displays of some of their crystal masterpieces.
Gustav Klimt's most famous painting "The Kiss" will serve as the backdrop for an interactive reenactment of visitors' version of their "perfect kiss". Yes, we invite you to kiss! And not only that, we will take a picture for you to keep and share.
Our Austria Travel Lounge powered by Austrian Airlines will offer personal guidance and fun tools to start planning your trip to Austria. Sit down and browse through coffee table books, get the nitty-gritty from travel guide books, have a friendly chat with one of our Austrian hosts at the travel lounge or linger over a game of “Memory” featuring Graz, charming Renaissance city in the southern part of Austria.
Throughout this two-week period the Austria Pop-Up will be the venue for concerts, food & wine events, film screenings and much more. More detailed information and a complete schedule of events will be available soon at www.austria.info/popup

Taking a cue from the relaxed pace of the cafés that are a hallmark of the Viennese lifestyle, Visions of Austria – produced by WLIW 21 - offers a serene tour of the country that invites you to linger, perhaps with a cup of coffee in hand for the total experience of a virtual vacation.
Stunning high definition footage shot in winter and spring captures the idyllic essence of Austria: you can almost smell the waft of strudel as the helicopter-mounted camera glides over picturesque streets and spacious squares.
The program’s soundtrack showcases a glorious musical tradition of a region where even the wind sounds musical, including compositions by “Waltz King” Johann Strauss and native sons Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler, Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
To complete your virtual journey to Austria, stop by at our Café Sacher for a slice of chocolate cake with whipped cream or indulge in a real piece of apple strudel...
