Terry Jones first gained attention for his “International Burn a Koran Day” commemoration of 9/11, author John Manrique felt the need to respond. So the forty year-old, South Florida-based writer launched a web page declaring Sept. 12, 2010, "Celebrate America & Reject Small-minded, Bigoted Reverend Day." Today, with Rev. Jones’s continued antics driving an international media frenzy to new heights of absurdity, Manrique feels a stronger declaration is required.

“What the hell is happening?” Manrique asks. “How do a backwoods screwball and his rusty old trailer with a vinyl banner tacked on its side ignite worldwide outrage? As a result of legitimizing this fool, today we’ve got international protests, people being injured, the difficult job of American troops made more dangerous, and threats of violence flying … why?”

In response to what he sees as an absolute failure of the media and leaders to exercise any sort of commonsense in dealing with Rev. Jones and his publicity stunt, Manrique has expanded his efforts and declared September “Celebrate America Month: Reject Idiocy & The Media Carnival That Perpetuates It.” A new web page has been launched for visitors to post their thoughts and comments (www.johnmanrique.com/celebrateamericamonth.html).

“This crackpot should never have been given a platform, yet the media spotlight was cast bright on the lunatic fringe and leaders from across the spectrum jumped at the bait. In my opinion it’s a blatant sell-out for sensationalism, and yet another disturbing case of orchestrating division and distraction to further political and social agendas. Enough already.”

And so Manrique has extended his effort to a month long drive, inviting anyone who wishes to share their message of what makes America great in an attempt to “drown out this ridiculousness.”

“We need reasonable voices in this country to rise up and resonate around the world,” Manrique says. “Hopefully our example will inspire the same from our media and leaders.”
