While most runners are carbo-loading or planning their hydration strategy on the eve before the big run, John Manrique is thinking about what he's going to write across 26.2 miles ... in 140 characters or less. The South Florida-based author is running his first full marathon tomorrow (Nov. 5, 2010) at the 7th Annual Marathon of the Palm Beaches, and is planning to Tweet the experience live from the course in support of the event's official charity, Achilles International.

http://twitter.com/manrique_writes "I've been training eighteen weeks for the marathon," Manrique shares, "and it's been an extremely fulfilling personal experience. For athletes with disabilities I can only imagine the sense of accomplishment and confidence participating in an event such as this must bring, and it's awesome that organizations such as Achilles International work to bring that opportunity to more of our local children, adults, and wounded veterans with disabilities."
Tying into the power of social networking via Twitter.com, Manrique plans to Tweet his progress and "Twictures" via iPhone every few miles from the course. At the bottom of each Tweet he is including a link readers can click to donate to Achilles International. He will begin "Tweeting" just prior to the race - which begins at 6:15 am EST - and he can be followed on Twitter at www.twitter.com/manrique_writes.
"Hopefully I can come up with a few amusing moments, a couple laughs, that folks will 'Retweet' and share to create greater awareness for Achilles International," Manrique says. "At a minimum, I expect my digital delirium in the latter miles will make for entertaining reading ... kind of like a stunt chicken."
As the OFFICIAL CHARITY of the Marathon of the Palm Beaches, Achilles International's mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics, promote personal achievement, enhance self esteem, and lower barriers. Founded in NYC in 1983, the organization serves all ages and abilities in cities around the US and in 70 countries around the world. The Achilles FREEDOM TEAM of Wounded Vets primarily serves military personnel injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Achilles KIDS program serves our children with disabilities through the adaptive physical education department of the school system.
For the Marathon of the Palm Beaches, Achilles is increasing its efforts to include more local children with disabilities in the Kids Races, and an increased number of local wounded veterans and adults with disabilities in the 5K, Half-Marathon or Full Marathon. Through the Chamber of Commerce and local organizations, the charity is working to provide volunteers to assist in the training and to help raise the funds to make this opportunity possible for this year, and many years to come at the Marathon of the Palm Beaches Festival.
