http://www.charityauctionworld.com The Dash poem is a short poetic read found on thousands of blogs and websites and quoted by inspirational speakers and read aloud at funerals. The grammatical dash that references the span of time between birth and death was the inspiration for the poem.
“The first letter I received from Ellis’ representative demanded that I pay a sum of $7500 for copyright infringement.”, said Brown. The letter charged Brown had damaged Ellis by printing the poem. “I thought the letter was a hoax.” said Brown. Soon more emails from Jolin were sent continuing with the financial demand.
Brown found the dash poem in a box of books donated to Whisker City, a feline rescue organization she founded in 1992. By posting the poem, she hoped to inspire people to volunteer and support Whisker City and the many non-profits she works with. She posted the poem along with a link to Linda Ellis’ website so others could purchase the book. “My intentions were to support Ms. Ellis and inspire others. At no time did I benefit from posting The Dash poem. In fact, Ms. Ellis benefitted from my endorsement and promotion of her website.” said Brown.
Ms. Ellis’ posted a lengthy explanation on her website as to why she takes an aggressive stance to protect her intellectual property. “Suffice to say, it’s only fair that my work remain my work and that I, as the sole copyright owner, have the legal right to decide where, with whom and by what means…my work(s) are shared, published and distributed.”
Brown understands the importance of protecting intellectual property. “I have many friends in the entertainment business and I produce scores of original documents, videos and audio files that I share openly on the internet. My issue with Ms. Ellis is her claim that I have profited and that I caused her to be damaged. I am a strong advocate for women in business and I have devoted my life to community service. For Ms. Ellis to pursue this matter in attempt to collect money for manufactured damage sickens me.” said Brown.
Brown is currently waiting out the demand by Jolin hoping to place a period and an end to the dash for her cash.
