Assuming your vehicle is in proper mechanical condition, and perhaps most importantly the condition of the tires, the following winter driving practices are suggested:

1. Prior to beginning any car trip take time to scrape and remove all snow and ice from windshields. Optimum visibility in all directions is important for drivers to maintain situational awareness. Even the roof of the car should be cleared to minimize potential distractions posed to other drivers from flying snow.

2. Apply braking cautiously in wet or winter conditions. Applying brakes is a natural reaction when drivers feel slippage while operating their vehicle. Hard braking in some circumstances can result in uncontrolled skids.

3. When driving maintain awareness of everything around your vehicle. Paying attention to vehicles braking at a distance ahead allows more time for drivers to bring their vehicles to a controlled stop if necessary.

4. Consult manufacturer recommendations for use of cruise control. However, in many instances use of cruise control may not be recommended during raining, snowing, or freezing conditions.

5. Intersections require extra special precautions. Black ice conditions may not be visible. Drivers should approach intersections more slowly and with increased awareness.

6. Drive slower than the posted speed limits. In general posted speed limits represent maximums under optimal driving conditions. Be aware that highway off ramps and bridges may be more treacherous than primary highways.
