They quickly learned that most teenage mothers live in very unstable environments that often include abusive relationships. Often transient, it was clear these teen moms needed a safe place to get emotional support, to live, to learn and to nurture their infants.

Teaching life skills to teen moms included training them about basic hygiene for their own benefit and to keep their babies safe. In 2003, Amie and Lisa’s dream for a place to assist teen moms became a reality with help from local churches, corporations and, in large part, from individual contributions.

Lisa Steven, Executive Director of Hope House of Colorado, saw an article in the Denver Business Journal about Meritech’s automated hand washing systems. Meritech had just received an award, Colorado Companies to Watch, for their CleanTech® hand washing systems, and Lisa was very impressed with the automated hand hygiene equipment. She decided that she had to have a hand washing system for Hope House.

“We were using the glo germ method prior to eating as an educational tool for teen moms, and even then young mothers were not washing or weren’t washing correctly. So much is going on with staff, moms, and visitors. We had a large problem with sickness spreading,” said Steven. After reading about the Meritech auto hand washing system, she decided “we had to have this!”

Compliments of Meritech, the CleanTech hand washing system is now installed at the back door at Hope House, which is actually the main entry. There is a standard size CleanTech hand hygiene machine as well as a small hand washing station for young children. All visitors, moms, kids and staff must wash their hands prior to entering the home.

“Everyone absolutely loves it -- especially the children! Some kids who are under 4 years of age use it, and even they think it’s great,” said Steven. The high-tech automated hand wash CleanTech® system is now one of the highlights of Hope House tours with volunteers and donors. At least 10 tours or more a week bring a variety of visitors to the residence.

“The automated hand washing system, provided by Meritech, gives us peace of mind that dangerous pathogens are not being brought into the home by means of unwashed hands,” said Steven. “Not every teen mom needs a place to live, but they all do need a place to belong and learn about resources for life skills, education and support. About Hope House of Colorado

Hope House is a non-profit residential home for teen moms located in Denver, Colorado. Programs include mentoring, GED and residential programming, life skills training and education to help teens learn to be better mothers. Hope House currently helps about 100 moms per year, with plans to build a resource center adjacent to the existing residence to serve about 400 moms each year in the near future.
