In 2006, authors Randy Motz and Georgia Harris, a middle-aged couple with no previous backpacking experience, decided to test their 14-year marriage and spent six months hiking the Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine, in one continuous hike. Within the pages of “Solemates,” the reader travels alongside this intrepid duo as they discover whether or not their motto, “Quitting is not an option,” was a blessing or a curse?
“Solemates” is not a day-by-day journal of trail life, but rather a candid, introspective, and sometimes humorous look into the range of emotions experienced during the pursuit of such a life-changing adventure. For 2,175 miles, “Windtalker” and “Mom,” the trail names they used during their journey, wrestle with their personal weaknesses and learn to capitalize on each other’s strengths, and in doing so, gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to make and keep a marriage strong.
It is a warmhearted account of lessons in perseverance, human nature, compassion, understanding, teamwork and love. Their stories, and those of their thru-hiking companions, reveal insights into the human spirit and refreshing perspectives on what is truly important in life. Not just for hikers, “Solemates” is a book about a 14-year relationship and how the unique hurdles and rewards they experienced together apply to everyone’s relationships in everyday life.
States co-author Randy Motz, “We are extremely excited that this book is now available to those who prefer an eBook to a traditional paperback. Those who own a Kindle, Nook, SONY WiFi Reader or Kobo Pulse, and other popular eBook readers, even Android phones, can come along with us on our journey. It is also available at the Apple Store, to be downloaded to an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or on a computer with iTunes. This format has opened up a whole new avenue with which to reach readers with the story of how our marriage survived being together 24/7, for six months, and how the challenges of our 2,175-mile odyssey changed our lives.”
In early 2012, Randy and Georgia’s second book, “The Walk – Reflections on Life and Faith from the Appalachian Trail” will also be available in an eBook format. In “The Walk” the authors draw the many inescapable parallels between walking the Appalachian Trail and a walk of faith.
