Two Prime-Time TV Doctors and a Popular Comedian Cast in Starring Role at Gala Tonight to Benefit the John Wayne Cancer Institute at the Beverly Hilton.
(Beverly Hills, CA – November 19, 2011) Grey’s Anatomy[i/] co-star James Pickens Jr., Gossip Girl’s[i/] Billy Baldwin, and Actor-Comedian Tom Arnold are being honored for their work on and off screen to combat cancer Saturday, November 19th at the 22nd Annual ABCs Gala at the Beverly Hilton. The black-tie event is sponsored by the Associates for Breast and Prostate Cancer Studies (ABCs), a local charity that has raised more than 12 million dollars in the past decade for the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Patrick Wayne, who heads up the John Wayne Foundation, is expected to attend.
Actor James Pickens Jr., co-starring as Dr. Richard Webber on Grey’s Anatomy, will receive the “Spirit of Hollywood Award” for his foundation’s community involvement and for a series of PSA’s he appeared in that encouraged men to get checked for prostate cancer.
"I'm glad to do anything I can to urge men to get prostate exams because early detection is crucial to the successful treatment of this disease. I'm humbled to accept an award in association with the John Wayne Cancer Institute, which does so much to advance research and seek a cure," says Pickens.
Actor Billy Baldwin, who has appeared in episodes of Gossip Girl as Dr. William van der Woodsen, will receive the “Spirit of Entertainment Award”. He has been a great supporter of cancer charities, including taking an active role in the foundation started by and named after his mother Carol, who is a breast cancer survivor. Actor-Comedian Tom Arnold is also a great supporter of various charity events related to raising money and awareness of cancer. He is this year’s “Spirit of Comedy Award” recipient.
The Gala begins with a Cocktail Reception and Silent Auction at 6pm. Dinner, Awards and Live Auction begins at 8pm. Entertainment provided by singing stars Gloria Gaynor and Thelma Houston. MC for the event is Extra[i/] correspondent Jerry Penacoli, also a cancer survivor.
