Bach to Rock: 2012 Fastest Growing Company To Watch Winner

The Washington Business Journal picked 10 companies to be part of the first Companies To Watch feature of our annual Fastest Growing Companies awards program.

We asked our readers to vote for the company they thought — or hoped – would make the highest debut on the Fastest Growing Companies list next year. And the winner is ... Bach to Rock, the Bethesda-based music teaching company.

With Maryland locations in Bethesda and Gaithersburg, plus four in Virginia — McLean, South Riding, Herndon and Lansdowne — Bach to Rock has managed incredible growth despite a dismal economy.

Since founding in 2006, Bach to Rock has had a 1,000 percent three-year growth, according to Inc. Magazine. Inc. Magazine reports that the company's 2007 revenue was $302,162 and reached $3.3 million by 2010. That sort of growth, indeed, would put it high up on the Washington Business Journal's Fastest Growing Companies list next year.

Brian Gross, president of Bach to Rock, believes this is a result of the company's "unique teaching method, which is based on the knowledge that students learn best when they join together to play the music they like most." Students are able to work in professional recording studios and perform publicly in venues such as the 9:30 Club and The Strathmore.

In order to build their customer base, Bach to Rock heavily relies on referrals, which Gross says accounts for one-third of all new students. According to a survey from the school's parents, 98 percent said that they would recommend the school to their friends.

"One of our key strategies for success is hiring the best instructors and staff members and giving them the tools to succeed," Gross said. Based on feedback from a staff of 129 people, Bach to Rock recently updated the curriculum and added new programs such as their DJ school called Beat Refinery and B2R Glee Choir in response to student requests.

"As schools and local governments cut music education programs, Bach to Rock helps fill the void," said Gross. "It is our goal now and in the future to establish and build a strong network of franchisees that will help bring Bach to Rock to more communities across America."

Next year, Gross expects to open their first franchise location targeting the Mid-Atlantic and continue to expand across the country in 2013 and beyond.
