A bald spot can be more than a blow to vanity-it may be a red flag for future health problems.Research has identified hair loss at the crown of the head as a marker for elevated risk of heart disease.
Now a study has found that this trait may also indicate a higher risk of prostate cancer-as much as two times higher if a man's baldness was apparent by the age of 30.Thinning at the temples does not increase risk.
These findings are preliminary says University of Rochester dermatologist Mary Mercurio, but they make sense.High levels of male hormones like testosterone, which can cause hair follicles to shrink, may raise cholesterol counts and blood pressure-both linked to heart disease. The hormones can also contribute to prostate cancer. The upside to this obvious indicator? That bald spot is good reminder to keep a close eye on your blood pressure and cholesterol, and to discuss prostate cancer with your doctor.
Consulting a doctor before any medication is the best action a person should take for any hair loss treatment.
