Ban on unbranded Chinese mobiles gives a fillip to Small Indian Handset Manufacturers

September 29, 2009

Ban on non-IMEI Chinese mobiles in India following a complaint by intelligence agencies apprehending security threat has presented a new opportunity to the domestic handset manufacturers.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 29, 2009 -- The ban on non-IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) Chinese mobiles has presented a new market opportunity to small handset manufacturers.

The ban was imposed after the Indian intelligence agencies complained that Chinese phones sold in black markets pose a security threat to the country. Though established brands like Nokia, Samsung etc. are yet to step into this segment however some domestic players like Fly, Lava, i-Mate etc are quick to realize the potential and have already launched their handsets to plug this gap. Many others are likely to join the list soon. The smaller brands are particularly looking at tapping 40% of the retail outlets which have not been targeted by the major players. Low cost with novel features are the key drivers for these local brands.

These handsets are rich in multimedia features like AM radio, FM radio recorder etc. Some of them have dual SIM options, standby battery for 30 days, water resistant features etc.

They are also special feature handsets being manufactured for different age groups e.g. Intex is planning to launch a handset for senior citizens with a larger screen and font size, along with a single button dial and lock features.
