Bank Charges: 19 People Arrested Over Online Bank Scam

London, UK, 29th September, 2010: A total of 19 people have been arrested by the Metropolitan Police over claims that they stole millions of pounds from consumers' bank accounts.

It is thought that the 15 men and four women from London are responsible for stealing £6 million in three months through an online banking scam earlier this year.

The fraudsters used a computer virus called Zeus, which is a Trojan, to obtain the passwords for online bank accounts when customers typed them into a banking site.

They then transferred money from innocent consumers' accounts into bogus ones created by the suspects.

Terry Wilson, detective chief inspector of the force handling the case, urged consumers to ensure they had adequate security on their computers to protect them from such attacks.

He told thisismoney.co.uk: "We believe we have disrupted a highly organised criminal network, which has used sophisticated methods to siphon large amounts of cash from many innocent peoples' accounts, causing immense personal anxiety and significant financial harm."
