Before the invention of barcodes, punch cards were developed for merchandise uses. In 1932 a small group of students from Harvard University, guided by Wallace flint, were given a project. The project was centered to cause an initiative that consumers will select diverse merchandise from catalog after removing punch card from merchandise. These punch cards then given to the checker who insert the card into reader & hence transaction became completed, bill was generated & stock record got maintained. The problem was, of course, that the card reading equipment of the day was bulky, utterly unwieldy, and really expensive, hence there was a need of invent something which can do all these works without being a headache.
Next approach for Barcode (http://www.barcodetree.com) started in 1948, by Bernard Silver a graduate from Drexel Institute of technology located in Philadelphia. He overheard a conversation in the halls of Drexel Institute from President about local food chain for expanding system that automatically read product details at check counter. The dean turned down the request, but Bob Silver mentioned the conversation to his friend Norman Joseph Woodland, a twenty-seven-year-old graduate student and teacher at Drexel.
Firstly Woodland was thinking about implementing ink which would reflect under ultraviolet beam of light. They built device, but tool had problems with ink unsteadiness but they encountered problems ranging from ink instability to printing costs. To make idea success, Wood land left his job at Drexel and joined stock market and then went to his grandfather’s Florida apartment to seek success.
After several months he invented linear bar code, by means of elements from two conventional technologies: movie soundtracks and Morse code. In 1952, both Silver and Woodland were contracted to an agreement for their ideas they got offer from IBM & then IBM sold it to Philco Corporation at highest prices and again sold to RCA Corporation.
In 1962 Silver died at the age of 38 years. After five years patent was expired so National Association of Food Chains (NAFC) then requested to design a device that would work at fast processing speed for checkout process, to equipment manufacturers. RCA installed first scanner device at a Kroger store, Cincinnati in 1967. The code of product was "bull's-eye ", a set of concentric circular bars and spaces of dissimilar width. The labels on the products items were putted by Kroger employees but problems occurred with RCA code. Afterwards, RCA agreed that standard coding system should be there to equipment manufactures and dealers to adopt technology.
AT nearby time IBM George Laurer formulated code of rectangular bars based on ideas of Woodland. Then a committee was formed to hear portrayal from RCA & IBM. The committee found that the problem was with IBM codes & its size should be reduced. On 3 April, 1973, Committee discloses UPC barcode to World with little changes to IBM code and afterwards on 26 June 1974, the first product to be ever scanned became Wrigley chewing gum.
Afterwards industrial applicant barcodes came into focus & in 1950 AAR (Association of America Railroad) researched for identifying rail cars through automated ways. In 1967 AAR decided to bring new barcodes for car labeling but the idea got failed due to economic crisis.
Then barcode technology grows rapidly into advanced manner & now a day you can create advanced barcodes with different barcode fonts.
Barcode Scanner (http://www.barcodetree.com/barcode-scanner.htm) is device used to read information written ob barcodes printed on departmental objects. Barcode save product name, product price, quantity, company name and others.
