Barry Lebowitz Optometrist at Potomac Eye Care in Gaithersburg Explains Causes and Treatments for dry eyes. Tears are essential for good eye health. Tears bathe the eye, washing out dust and debris and keeping the eye moist. In dry eye syndrome, the eyes don't produce enough tears, or the tears that are produced have a chemical imbalance that causes them to evaporate too quickly.
Dry eye syndrome has several causes. It occurs as a part of the natural aging process, as a side effect of some medications, or because you live in a dry or windy climate. Dry eyes can also be a symptom of systemic diseases.
Tears are composed of three layers:
-The outer, lipid layer
-The middle, lacrimal layer;
-The inner, mucin layer.
Each layer is produced by different glands near the eye. A problem with any of these sources can result in dry eyes. Treatments may include non prescription artificial tears, or prescription drops such as steroids or Restasis. Eyelid hygiene and omega 3 fatty acid nutritional supplements may also be helpful.
