The Hidden Lives of Hoarders
The popular TLC series is in the midst of its second season, which dives deeper into the real-life struggles and intense treatment of extreme hoarders – people who are unable to part with their belonging to the point of personal disaster.
Each hour-long episode follows two obsessive hoarders who are fighting the compulsion to collect and return their lives to normalcy. Overwhelmed by piles and piles of stuff that has accumulated to the point of complete chaos, these people are on the verge of losing everything – their jobs, their homes, and their families.
Aware that addiction is destroying their lives, the hoarders agree it’s time for professional intervention. With the help of therapists and expert organizers like Brooke, they begin the long and difficult process to overcome their compulsion.
“Knowing where to start can be overwhelming and paralyzing for many people.” Brooke states. “Just like Norski, hoarders feel challenged to simply find space to sort their belongings. In addition, they feel a strong attachment to their possessions, making it difficult to let go. With my help and the simple three box (toss, donate, keep) sorting system, we were able to tackle Norski’s living room, hallway, entryway and bathroom. Norski found this to be extremely helpful and encouraging!”

Helping People Reduce and Control Clutter
Brooke has helped such organizations as the City of Santa Rosa, Business Networking International, California Women of Agriculture, KZST radio, and Santa Rosa Charter School get more efficient. Her company, Your Life Made Simple, helps people save time, money and resources by designing home-based systems to reduce and control clutter.
Brooke’s writing has been featured in publications such as Redbook, North Bay Biz, and in her blog at www.GraceBrooke.com. She combines creativity, compassion and experience to help her clients bring order to their lives and businesses, reduce stress caused by physical and mental clutter, and improve productivity.
“There’s a difference between ‘neat’ and ‘organized’,” she says. “If you’re neat, the house may be vacuumed and the kitchen may be clean … but if you open a cupboard or a closet things fall out. Behind the scenes there’s no order. When you’re organized, there’s a spot for everything.”
