It wasn’t long ago that the famous Jack Hanna encountered a family of angry Grizzly Bears. Since that time Hanna has been singing the praises of bear pepper spray to everyone who will listen. Mr. Hanna isn’t making idle claims when he tells hikers to carry bear spray with them for protection against all species of bear. The TV host and zookeeper says he was practicing what he preaches and used his bear spray on grizzlies to quickly defuse a dangerous situation.
Spring is upon us, the days become longer, temperatures begin to rise and outdoor activities increase. Outdoor enthusiasts look forward to activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and boating. This year as trips are booked and plans made, remember to be bear aware. Grizzly bears begin to actively search for food after a long winter hibernation.
Bear pepper spray has proven itself to be an effective tool for avoiding fatal encounters between people and grizzly bears. Although no deterrent is 100% effective against an attacking grizzly, compared to other counter-measures, including firearms, bear pepper spray has demonstrated the most success. In scientific studies conducted by University of Calgary grizzly bear expert Stephen Herrero, bear pepper spray was found to be 94% effective in deterring aggressive bears.
“Conflicts between hunters and bears occur every year. Carrying and knowing how to use bear pepper spray is recommended for everyone—hunters and other back country recreationalists alike— who venture into bear country,” said Kevin Frey, FWP Bear Management Specialist. “
Given a choice bears prefer to avoid human contact, and if they hear, see or even smell a human they will almost always retreat. Most bear and human encounters happen without us even becoming aware of the animals presence. Grizzles can certainly be provoked by people coming to close. Most of the time the bear becomes aggressive when attempting to protect its cubs or food.
Bear spray is simple to use and with a few minutes of practice anyone can become a pro. Accuracy, is of no concern when spraying bear spray. This is become it is dispersed as a crowd control magnum fog. A cloud spray makes a fog in the air, and when the spray hits the bear, it causes irritation in the eyes, nose, mouth, throat and lungs, temporarily disabling the bear. According to experts, there is no better way to stop an attack by an aggressive grizzly.
When selecting a bear spray, look for one that actually says the product is made for preventing bear attacks. The maximum range of bear spray should be at least 25 feet with a capasicin concentrations between 1 and 2 percent. The minimum size of bear spray should be 7.9 ounces and should be EPA registered.
