Lynbrook, New York-August 20, 2010- Placing a Mosque at Ground Zero is insensitive and confrontational to the families that suffered on September 11th. The Mosque will reopen the wounds of the victims of 9/11, yet, serve as a memorial for the people responsible for the attacks. Republican Candidate for Congress, Fran Becker, states, “This is not about religious freedom. This is about honoring the victims and the families, and New Yorkers. There are over 200 Mosques in New York City alone; there are plenty of other sites.”
Carolyn McCarthy, earlier this week, let the press know that she is not opposed to the building of the Mosque. Becker is appalled that McCarthy is not opposing the Mosque in any way. “She is out of touch with the needs of the families in this state,” he said.
He has recently written a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The letter states, “I am writing this letter to express my disappointment in your outspoken position in favor of the building of the Cordoba House Mosque and Culture Center just blocks from Ground Zero.” Becker also urges Mayor Bloomberg to find an alternate site for the Mosque to be built. The rest of the letter reads:
“Out of sensitivity for the victims of the September 11th attack, please work to find an alternate, acceptable location for this project.
As a Nassau County Legislator for the 6th District, I attended dozens of memorials and funerals for those that perished on September 11th. In those days, weeks, and months following, there is little that we could do as public officials other than pray for the families of those that died.
Even today, there is little that we can do to comfort our 9/11 families other than to be sensitive and respectful to their wishes. They do not need a lecture from their public officials about tolerance. They need their public officials to do the right thing.
To many metro New York families, Lower Manhattan continues to be a sacred burial ground, since the remains of their loved ones were never returned. This project cannot go forward as planned so close to ground zero without causing considerable pain and controversy.
I urge you to seize this opportunity to be a hero to the heroes of 9/11, and reconsider your position. Please work to find an alternate, suitable, location for the Mosque, and many generations will remember and appreciate your efforts.”
Fran Becker is the Republican candidate for New York's 4th Congressional District. He is running against incumbent Carolyn McCarthy (D-Garden City), who has held the seat for 6 terms. Fran is a business owner, an employer, and a certified financial planner. Fran has the background, experience and qualifications to get the job done in Congress.
