Once reputed as the most reliable detector of the presence of bed bugs, canines specializing in the “sniffing out” of these tiny pests may soon be unemployed. The development of a more reliable forensic test for the detection of bed bugs is making it easier, faster and more affordable than ever to confirm or deny a bed bug infestation in a home or business.
With the ever growing number of bed bug infestations topping 20 million, and only a handful of dogs trained to hunt these elusive creatures, the need for a more readily available detection method has become dire. Each day, thousands of homeowners, tenants and business owners have reason to suspect a bed bug infestation. “We didn’t know what we had. My son was waking in the mornings with some sort of bites. We couldn’t find any evidence, and with my son’s allergies, we were reluctant to bring a dog into our home”, says Dena Rathbun of Dallas, TX. “We did the simple swab test, sent it in and had results in less than 24 hours after that. I didn’t have to treat the house with unnecessary chemicals”.
For over a year, pest control firms have been utilizing the forensic testing, which isolates and identifies bed bug DNA with 99.9% accuracy. Testing is simple and requires no expertise, results are available within 24 hours of the sample receipt and costs less than $30. This process is far simpler, less expensive and more private than hiring a dog to inspect your home.
Unlike infestations of other insects, bed bug infestations are often of a low population, leave few clues of their presence and are hard to see due to their reclusive habits and small size. Bed bugs only come out to feed, which may be every few days up to a few weeks. They can hide in the tiny crevices of walls, furniture and bedding and never be seen. Visible signs are often difficult to detect unless the population is high and the infestation severe. In cities where bed bug infestations have made a resurgence, testing can be a proactive step in identifying the problem early, when it is easier to treat.
Ms. Rathbun states “I sleep easier at night knowing that my family is safe and comfortable. I’m just thankful to have learned about this test, and to have done it myself in private”.
