To keep abreast of trends and defend their position in the international community for business, Bermuda was represented at a the Commonwealth Secretariat and International Financial Centres Forum roundtable event at Marlborough House, London where they presented a powerful case for the island’s financial services industry.

They argued against misinformation and common stereotypes often met by centres like Bermuda. Highlights of the presentation, the recent Economic Impact Survey which showed that Bermuda was the most important international provider of insurance services to the United States and that its trade and investment relationship with the United States sustained 301,000 jobs in 2010. That is some powerful numbers coming from the island and shows how they impact jobs to the west.

Some argue that for Bermuda to maintain its current standard of living and employment opportunities for its people, policies encouraging investment in the Island need to be considered. It has been stated that amounts of current protectionism could be detrimental to Bermuda’s long-term prospects.

Business Bermuda noted in a recent article that the head of the corporate at Attride-Stirling & Woloniecki, Neil Horner attended the event said: “The conference was very constructive. A key take-away was the need for small centres to share perspectives and work together to meet the challenges that we all face. Horner added, “It emerged clearly from the meeting that small centres improve capital markets efficiency, liquidity, investment and job creation in major economies with which they maintain trading relationships.

A representative, Donald Bishop, speaking from Longtail Aviation International, web-based www.longtailaviation.bm, the sole private jet charter company based in Bermuda noted that small international financial centres like Bermuda play a key role for developing greater transparency and information exchange. Bishop stated, "Bermuda has played a major role in this process, being the first country to ascend to the top list and is Vice-President of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes.”
