EXCERPT:

The Indians were right. The demon floated behind me in the water-cave. Its vast hatred and hunger opened like a ragged maw. It was all pallid, all strings…. there in the water, it drifted and snaked, a boneless, jellied horror. I tried not to move. I didn't want to excite it.

Leviathan. I should never have entered here...it flailed the water, tasting my scent....

I felt the last of my air bleed from my tanks. I was dizzy, coming apart in layers. This would be over soon....anoxia and the cold were killing me off.

But, the demon said, “Jack! By the prickling in my thumbs, I can tell you—something even more evil than us this way comes.”

In the dark, guttural, supernatural creatures unhurriedly advanced toward me, in a hushed rumble. They were just beyond sight, like night-things that wait expectantly under the bed; or like a muffled, mewling sound in the cellar; or the squirming, clotted dark at the top of the stairs.

When I saw them, I felt my bowels would shit hot pitch. My blood congealed to plaster. I shot all my lights on. The missing divers descended out of nowhere like black spiders. I saw by their bone grins like crescent moons that they were all dead. They drifted at me in the narrow tunnel and grew larger as they closed in on me.

The skinless horrors stared at me with meaty sockets for eyes. Their black arms rose and waved and inter-weaved like giant kelp on unseen currents. They made no sound. They breathed no air.

My back was against a wall of rock. The dead were a bone barrier in front of me. One of the dead horrors detached itself from the beckoning forest of bodies. It drifted down to the sandy floor and hung there. Its cartilaginous mask of a face was blank. Slowly, it made the Indian sign for, “Come here.”

“No.”

“Come here.”

“No.”

“Power is here. A gift is here.”

That dead thing which spoke to me in a dead language slowly pointed its bone-needle finger at the floor. Near the white-taloned feet was a half-buried object.

The Cat’s words coiled out of the blackness and whispered against my cheek, “Jack…look for their secrets. They will share.”

Her words carried me. I drifted deep into the sea-changed grove of skeleton voyagers. The dead rattled and quivered. They leaned. They reached hard hands out from the dark. Paralyzed and puny, I was fear-struck. My air tanks were empty.
The dead showed me a place where there is no air; no fear. No pain. No desire. Nothing. Ah! Beauty!

Beauty!

Beauty!

Skin and muscle peeled from my bones, and pain and fear went with them. Freed, I crossed a soft boundary into the final dominion.

“Jack! You dumb bastard!” It was KC, my dead father. A vast, seething shadow billowed out from him at me like a wind from hell.
