In vertical milling machines the spindle is in a vertical position and can be raised or lowered and in may instances can be tilted from front to back or side to side for angular machining. Horizontal milling machines are configured so that the spindle is horizontal. The work is fastened to the table which can be moved from side to side or front to back. For larger work the table is carried on a knee which can be raised or lowered. Horizontal mills may also have a rotating table so that milling can be done at various angles.

Horizontal mills can take heavier cuts because the cutters can be supported on an arbor and are used for cutting flat surfaces, slots, grooves, bevels or other shapes which is determined by the type of cutter used.

Milling machines may be manually controlled, mechanically controlled or CNC controlled. They are available in sizes from small bench type models or mini-mills all the way up to room-size machining centers.

They have been improved upon and redesigned to now we have CNC Milling Centers which automate much of the milling processes.
