Whenever the reasons behind obtaining a tattoo in the first place are no longer valid, there are a number of removal treatment options available. An individual may no longer want a tattoo because the symbolism is no longer important to them. Individuals who want to end gang affiliation often seek to have tattoos associating themselves with those groups removed. Tattoo removal may also be the best course of action when having tattoos is interfering with an individual’s respect or advancement in the workplace.
Laser treatment under the direction of an experienced physician is among the most effective and common removal treatments for tattoos. This procedure works by removing the tattoo ink from the skin by directing very quick and short pulses of laser light onto the skin’s surface so that the ink is ultimately broken up and disposed of by the body’s own immune system. Laser treatment for tattoo removal must often be done in several treatments which occur several weeks apart and can cause scarring or blistering of the targeted area. Laser treatment can be costly. Individuals who have undergone laser removal treatment also report that it can feel quite painful.
Another less painful but just as costly removal treatment is another form of light therapy called IPL or Intense Pulsed Light Therapy. Instead of using laser light to break up the tattoo ink deposited under the skin, IPL works by first applying a gel-like substance over the tattoo area, then administering pulses of high intensity light. This form of tattoo removal usually requires fewer sessions than laser treatment but can prove to be just as expensive.
Dermabrasion is another treatment method for removing tattoos in which the skin is numbed in order for a sanding instrument to be applied to the target area, causing the skin containing the tattoo ink to be gradually peeled away. A protective dressing must be applied to the skin immediately after and there can be some residual scarring after this procedure.
Salabrasion is a method similar to dermabrasion in which saline solution is roughly applied to peel away the skin containing the tattoo ink. A protective dressing must also be used after this procedure while the skin is healing. Another tattoo removal procedure involves actually surgically cutting out the tattoo and sewing together the edges of skin. This method is usually advised only if the tattoo area to be removed is quite small in size.
A consultation with a physician is always advised in order to choose the best treatment for tattoo removal and to get questions answered regarding cost, length of treatment and possible side effects such as scarring.
