Bicycle Safety Training courses for children aged 7 – 9 years thanks to a $6,000 community grant

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 24, 2012 --Emerald Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) will commence Bicycle Safety Training courses for children aged 7 – 9 years, thanks to a $6000 community grant from Suncorp Insurance and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The grant is one of 23 awarded to community groups throughout Queensland for initiatives that promote safer roads and reduce crime or the fear of crime.

Many local schools and clubs will take part in the program which will focus on educating youth about road safety.
The program started after police observed many school aged children in Emerald were not wearing bicycle helmets when riding and that in general, road safety awareness was low.

Suncorp Executive Manager, Martin Weatherhead, said: “Emerald kids will get hands on experience on a bicycle, lessons in when they should cross roads and learn about other key elements of road safety.”

Emerald PCYC Branch Manager, Acting Sergeant Renae Cannon, said they hoped the course would not only give children a greater understanding of using the roads when riding a bike, but also provide them with general road safety awareness when they grow up and start driving.

The Community Grants Scheme (Road Safety and Crime Prevention) made possible by Suncorp Insurance and QPS is designed to enable local communities to develop and implement projects that will improve road safety or help reduce crime and fear of crime in Queensland.

The next round of applications for the Scheme will open early next year. Interested community groups are encouraged to check the Suncorp Insurance road safety website, suncorp.com.au/safer-roads in early 2012 for details on how to apply.
